Feb 28th Club Social Event A Great Success!

Hello Fellow Sailors,
Another gastronomic feast was enjoyed Saturday as sailing club members escaped their winter-bound cabins and gathered for a peasant-food themed meeting and cook-off.

It was apparent from the quality and variety of the offerings that few had to dig too far back to find a peasant heritage recipe and few of the eager taste-testers seemed unfamiliar with the fare… perhaps even in this time of continuous TV cooking shows, reality kitchen shows, and constant exposure to the magnificent creations of master chefs; the traditional recipes of preceding generations still have major appeal and a place in our homes…Or maybe it’s a sailor thing?

Eighteen dishes were offered for sharing with the group…

There were four in the “starter” category…Larry’s Cheese Tray, Gail’s ‘Poor Man’s Soup’, Paul & Debbie’s Leek/Potato soup, and Sonja’s Fresh-Baked Bread. Eleven main course dishes competed for the appetites of the discerning judges (aka ‘starving sailors’). Richard offered a Cassoulet and Marinated Vegetables, a Polenta Lasagna came from Dan & Judy and Jen & Pat presented a Sausage and Cabbage Casserole. Marnie displayed Salmon a la King in a hollowed bread bowl, Randi went to Thailand for her Green Curry and Riet evoked Scandinavia with her Boeren Kool dish. Sue pleased the crowd with her Mulligan Casserole and Marjorie came up from down-under with her Australian Shepherd’s Pie. Dianne and John Main completed the main courses with Dianne’s Beef Stew and John’s Manatoulin Venison.

To complete the feast we had three fine desserts.
Marnie’s Queen Pudding, Paul & Roxanne’s Bread Pudding and Rum Sauce, and Larry’s Fruit Cake competed to fulfill the hungers, passions and desires of everyone present. And the winners were… each and every member who participated and enjoyed.

Special mention goes to:
Larry, Dan, and Paul & Roxanne for third-places in the Starter, Main, and Dessert categories respectively.
Gail, Sue, and Larry for second place in each of the three categories. Debbie, Richard, and Marnie for getting the most votes for Starters, Main Course, and Dessert.

Thanks to Jamie for outlining this year’s racing program and to Judy for her selection of prizes for the winning cooks.

Another Great!!! SSC meeting… don’t miss out on the next one!

2008 Lake Erie International (LEI)
Race from Dunkirk Yacht Club to Sugarloaf Sailing Club

Another great event!
Congrats to all the SSC and DYC members who help to organize and participated in the LEI last weekend.

They were rewarded with great sailing weather on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There were 12 boats the participated in the race from
Dunkirk Yacht Club to Sugarloaf Sailing Club - Port Colborne.
The 2 fleets, spinnaker (SPIN) and Jib and Main (JAM) had 6 boats each
with awards going first place SPIN and JAM boats,
first over the line Canadian and US boat and Top Overall Boat.

SSC members sailed over to DYC Friday afternoon and where greeted by DYC with some great hospitality and food. The race took place Saturday with all 12 boats sailing to Port Colborne, the home of Sugarloaf Sailing Club. The conditions were great with some boats crossing over in just under 4 hours. The trophy presentation and Pizza and Beer was lot of fun and we discussed tactics crossing over and then continued on to enjoy the Canal days events downtown Port Colborne. On Sunday everyone was rewarded with great sailing conditions allowing the DYC sailors time to head back home.

Cheers to all the people who helped re-instate this event.
We are sure it will bring many years of good sailing and club corrodery.
Results and photos will be posted shortly.
