COMMODORE’S MESSAGE: Neil DeKoning
The ice has finally left the harbour and the Lake. A number of member’s boats are in the water. Registration for Wednesday night sailing has taken place. The Interclub Cruise is only five weeks away, gasp! Our winter social events are but memories now.
The German Cook off at the Oud’s was well attended by over 30 members despite the frigid temperatures and snowy weather. A number of sailors didn't make the mark and slid off the driveway. No penalties were assessed, and they weren't made to go round again! Thanks to Nell and John for opening their home for this event. Cook -off results are reported below.
More recently in April we held our spring general meeting at the MacMillan’s home in Fenwick with 20 in attendance. The weather was much improved and to my knowledge all sailors managed to stay on the course leaving no ruts in Joe's lawn. Business raised at this meeting is discussed below by various members of the executive. On behalf of the Club, thank you very much Linda and Joe, for hosting this event, the second time in two years that you have made your home available.
Welcome to new members Stephen and Mary Anne Casey who will be sailing their C&C 27 from G Dock. When you run into them around the marina please make them feel welcome. On a sadder note, Tom and Uda Huffman are moving to the Bertie boat club this year and will be competing Sir Isaac in events with Point Abino clubs. I'm sure that our paths will cross from time to time.
Steve Prokopetz organized a trip to a Buffalo Sabres game for Aaron Oskam. His story about this is included in this newsletter. Thanks Steve, for your good work.
Gail and I will be traveling to BC this summer to visit our new granddaughter Katie. We leave on May 31st and return by Labour Day. In our absence, Vice Commodore Kevin Kehl and Past Commodores Brian and Marnie McCulloch will look after club affairs. Also, you will see Abigail in the water, but now she will reside on G string. We will miss the good old girl.
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable summer on and off the water.
